Official Daystay Playground Opening

25 March 2010

The Honourable Bill Shorten, Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children’s Services opened the Shane Warne Foundation Playground located at Queen Elizabeth Centre, 53 Thomas Street Noble Park, on 25th March 2010

This greatly anticipated new facility has been named in honour of the major contribution of funds received from the Shane Warne Foundation and topped up by the Gandel Charitable Trust.

Young children who attend QEC’s many day-based activities will now have a safe and secure outdoor area in which to play. It is a wonderful space full of interactive and especially designed features aimed at engaging and encouraging children from vulnerable, refugee backgrounds and/or children with disabilities.

The Afghani and Sudanese children and their parents who come along each week to participate in the ‘Peer-led Playgroups’ greatly enjoyed the garden gnomes and the life-size butterfly that kept them entertained throughout the morning. The parents who participate in the ‘My Time’ program watched on as their children with disabilities had fun on the play equipment and splashed the water in the birdbath after it was filled by Mr Shorten to encourage flora and fauna into the new garden.

Design and construction was a collaborative effort. The team included Pattie Morgan, an early childhood consultant who was responsible for the overall design concept for the playground. Justin Staggard was the landscape architect and supervised construction and Simon Millar was the landscape gardener.
